Summit ESC Donates Over 4,000 Boxes of Cereal for Akron Children’s Hospital
Posted: 5/23/2017

From May 1-8, Summit Educational Service Center (ESC) participated in Akron Children’s Hospital’s cereal drive, Breakfast Doesn’t Take a Summer Vacation. Through Summit ESC’s efforts, a total of 4,667 servings of cereal were donated.

Akron Children’s Hospital’s drive is part of a national effort founded by Detroit Medical Center Children’s Hospital of Michigan in 2010 to end childhood hunger. All cereal collected was donated to the Akron Canton-Food Bank for local communities.

“We were pleased to join in the effort to support the children and families in the Greater Akron area,” said Kristin Fazio, Summit ESC’s student services director. “Our contribution helps to end the fight against hunger. We look forward to being a part of the drive next year.”

Cereal was donated by the families, staff and teachers of Summit ESC, Kids First, TOPS, State Support Team, Region 8 (SST-8), and preschool programs. Additional donations were made by Crossroads Community Church in Doylestown, Summit ESC staff member Megan Longfellow’s daughter’s volleyball team and Big Tree Fitness in Akron.

Summit ESC, Kids First, TOPS and SST-8 collected a total of 1,728 servings; Summit ESC’s preschool programs in Copley, Cuyahoga Falls, Nordonia Hills and Tallmadge collected a total of 1,305 servings; Crossroads Community Church collected a total of 1,197 servings; and Big Tree Fitness collected a total of 437 servings.

The purpose of the cereal drive is to support students in need of food within the community. The drive provides an opportunity for an immediate impact on hunger during the summer months.

“This was a great initiative for Summit ESC to take part in,” said Superintendent Joe Iacano. “It’s important for us to support this critical cause so that students can continue to be successful without worrying about their hunger. I would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who donated to help make this a great drive.”
